 본 필자는 최근 쏟아지고 있는 80~90년대 명작 리메이크 작품을 플레이하면서 "왜 요즘 RPG에서는 감동이 느껴지지 않을까?"라고 생각한 적이 있었다.
 시작부터 끝까지 게임에 몰입하게 하는 몰입력과 맵 곳곳을 알차게 채운 콘텐츠. 그리고 미려한 연출과 의외의 반전까지. 이 고전 명작들은 필자에게 엔딩 스크롤을 끝까지 보게 만드는 감동을 주었고, 추억의 한켠으로 남을 만한 강렬한 감정을 남겼다. 
 하지만 최근 등장하는 RPG 장르의 작품들은 그래픽과 스케일은 출중할지 모르나 “정말 즐겁게 게임을 했다.”라는 감정에 다가서는 작품은 손에 꼽을 정도로 줄어들었다. 오히려 PC(정치적 올바름)라는 괴상한 풍조가 게임 시장을 덮치면서 ‘과거보다 현재가 더 퇴보했다’라는 생각마저 들게 할 정도였다. 
 이에 필자는 “내가 나이가 들어서 감정이 무뎌진 것 아닐까?”, “요즘 세대는 이런 걸 좋아하나 보다.”라고 생각해 현실에 순응하며 시선을 바꿔 보기도 했지만, 마음 한구석의 아쉬움은 사라지지 않았던 것이 사실.

 이러한 마음 한구석에 있는 ‘요즘 RPG’에 대한 아쉬움을 완전히 날려버릴 게임이 최근 등장했다. 바로 지난 4월 24일 발매된 ‘클레르 옵스퀴르: 33 원정대’(이하 33 원정대)가 그 주인공이다. 
 ‘33 원정대’는 유비소프트의 전직 개발자들이 대거 참여한 프랑스의 샌드폴 인터렉티브에서 개발한 작품이다. 출시 이전까지는 큰 기대를 받지 못한 이 게임은 출시 3일 만에 판매량 100만 장을 돌파한 것은 물론, 메타크리틱 92점, 이용자 평가 점수 9.6(10점 만점)이라는 엄청난 호평 속에 선풍적인 인기를 누리며, 2025년 최대 흥행작 중 하나로 떠오르는 중이다.
 이 게임을 플레이하면서 느낀 감정은 ‘아름다움’이었다. 기괴하지만, 혐오스럽지 않고, 암울하지만, 고풍스러운. 명과 암이 교차하는 ‘클레르 옵스퀴르’(명암법) 기법이 인상적인 미술품을 보는 듯한 아름다움 말이다.

 ‘33 원정대’는 초반부터 스토리로 이용자를 압도한다. 이 게임은 균열로 인해 세계가 찢어진 이후 등장한 ‘페인트리스’라는 존재가 거대한 비석에 새긴 숫자에 따라 인류가 장미꽃이 되어 사라지는 ‘고마주’ 현상이 67년간 이어진 세계를 기반으로 하고 있다.
 이에 인류는 페인트리스를 막기 위한 원정대를 매년 보냈지만, 단 한 명도 살아 돌아오지 못했고, 숫자가 33에 이르러 33살의 남녀가 모두 ‘고마주’ 된 이후 다시 파견된 ‘33 원정대’의 이야기를 담고 있는 것이 이 게임의 핵심 스토리다. 
 줄어드는 숫자에 따라 결정되는 수명. 멸망을 피하기 위한 인류의 몸부림. 그리고 이 비극이 아름답게 그려지는 연출까지 게임 초반 분위기는 의아함과 함께 흥미로움을 불러일으키며, ‘페인트리스’를 찾아 떠난 대륙의 기괴하고, 아름다운 풍경이 더해지면서 몰입감을 더욱 끌어올린다.

 이 게임의 배경은 최근 등장한 작품 중에서도 손에 꼽을 만한 수준급의 디자인을 자랑한다. 19세기 말부터 20세기 초까지 절정을 이뤘던 프랑스의 ‘벨 에포크’ 스타일의 건물과 사물이 맵 곳곳에 배치되어 고풍스러움과 을씨년스러움을 동시에 풍기며, 바다, 숲, 사막, 고원 등의 맵은 게임을 잠시 멈추고 감상할 정도로, 상당한 퀄리티를 보여준다.
 특히, 적으로 등장하는 몬스터와 거대 보스, 맵 곳곳에서 등장하는 기괴한 종족과 먼저 대륙에 파견되어 다양한 방식을 시도했지만, 결국 실패한 원정대의 흔적과 이들의 몸부림을 확인할 수 있는 일지가 곳곳에 남아 있는 등 판타지 세계를 체험하는 기분을 한껏 끌어올리는 것도 인상적이다.

 이 독특한 세계는 전투 시스템을 만나면서 더욱 빛을 발한다. ‘33 원정대’는 턴제와 실시간 전투를 섞어 놓은 듯한 독특한 스타일의 전투 콘텐츠를 선사한다. 스킬과 공격, 아이템 사용 등의 행동은 턴제로 진행되지만, 스킬에 구현된 ‘QTE’ 시스템이 더해졌으며, 패링(쳐내기), 회피 등이 더해져 실시간 전투의 재미도 함께 구현된 모습이다.

 이중 스킬의 경우 ‘QTE’ 성공 여부에 따라 대미지가 크게 차이가 나며, 패링, 회피 등의 시스템은 오랜 시간 플레이하는 RPG의 특성상 피로감을 주기도 하지만, 공격이 닿기 전 살짝 시간이 느려지는 슬로우 효과가 들어가 있고, 회피의 경우 명확히 표시해주기 때문에 난도는 그리 높지 않은 모습이다.(물론 후반 대형 보스전은 정말 어렵다.) 
 이 ‘패링’은 게임에 상당한 영향을 미치는데, 바로 카운터를 날릴 수 있기 때문이다. ‘33 원정대’의 몬스터는 최소 2회 최대 10회가 넘는 공격 횟수를 지니고 있는데, 이 공격을 모두 ‘패링’하면 카운터 공격이 발동된다.

 특히, 이 카운터 공격은 상당한 대미지를 줄 수 있고, 붕괴(스턴) 게이지를 크게 높여주기 때문에 방어를 위한 ‘패링’이 공격으로 이어지는 결과로 이어진다. 만약 ‘다크소울’ 같이 소울라이크를 오래 플레이하여 ‘패링’에 익숙한 이용자는 공격 한번 없이도, 적을 물리치는 플레이를 펼칠 수 있을 정도다.

 캐릭터 육성 시스템도 매우 흥미롭다. 이 게임은 총 5명의 캐릭터가 등장하는데, 캐릭터마다 특성과 스킬 시스템이 모두 다르게 구성되어 있다. 일례로 주인공인 ‘마엘’은 공격, 방어, 명인 등 총 3개의 태세로 전환하여 상황에 맞추어 운영할 수 있으며, 태세에 따라 대미지와 방어력이 크게 달라지는 특성이 있다.
 여기에 마법사인 ‘르네’는 사용한 마법 속성에 따라 ‘얼룩’이 쌓이며, 이 ‘얼룩’을 사용해 대미지를 더 증폭시킬 수 있고, ‘모노코’는 몬스터를 처치하면 해당 몬스터의 ‘다리’(진짜 다리다)를 수집해 해당 몬스터로 변신할 수 있어 전투를 진행할수록 스킬의 폭이 넓어진다.

 이는 어떤 캐릭터를 선택하느냐에 따라 플레이 스타일이 완전히 달라지는 결과로 이어져 캐릭터 조합마다 저마다의 스타일과 장단점이 존재하는 등 모든 캐릭터를 고루고루 사용하며, 육성하는 재미를 느낄 수 있었다.

 이 캐릭터는 ‘픽토스’를 통해 더욱 강화할 수 있다. 일종의 패시브 스킬이라고 할 수 있는 ‘픽토스’는 몬스터 사냥 혹은 스토리 진행에 따라 얻을 수 있으며, 캐릭터에게 장착한 이후 총 4번의 전투를 진행하여 해당 패시브를 습득할 수 있다.
 ‘픽토스’는 2회 연속 공격, 충격을 받기 전까지 공격 대미지 30% 상승. AP(행동 포인트) 증가, 1인 전투 시 스탯 증가, 공격과 받는 대미지 동시 증가 등 다양한 형태로 구성되어 있으며, 리스크와 증강 효과를 동시에 주는 경우도 많아 매우 많은 선택지가 제공되는 느낌이었다.

 특히, 이 ‘픽토스’는 캐릭터마다 보유하고 있는 픽토스 포인트에 맞추어 장착할 수 있는데, 리스크가 적은 스킬은 매우 높은 포인트를 자랑한다. 이에 이용자는 캐릭터의 특성과 전투 스타일에 따라 ‘픽토스’를 장착할 수 있으며, 어떤 ‘픽토스’를 선택하느냐에 따라 전투의 행방이 크게 달라지는 것도 인상적이었다.
 이렇게 육성과 전투를 이어가면서 게임을 하다 보면 자연스레 캐릭터에게 서사가 쌓이게 되는데, 본 필자가 상당히 인상적으로 느꼈던 부분은 이 캐릭터들의 행동을 연출하는 개발사의 태도였다.

 사실 몇 년간 PC 광풍이 불면서 많은 게임에서 남성을 의도적으로 낮추거나, 성적 정체성에 대한 다양성 등을 강요하는 것 같은 매우 거북한 상황이 펼쳐지는 일이 많아졌지만, 이 게임에서는 오롯이 스토리에 입각하여 캐릭터들을 그려내 자연스럽게 게임의 몰입을 더 해준다.
 실제로 요즘 특히나 길을 잃고 헤매는 유비소프트의 전직 개발진이 모여 만든 게임이라는 점에서 “이상한 것이 나오면 어쩌지?”라고 걱정하기도 했으나, 캐릭터마다 가진 매력이 매우 뛰어나고, 거대한 사건 속에서 반복하고, 화해하며, 결합하는 과정이 매우 설득력 있게 그려져 한번 게임을 키면 4~5시간 이상을 할 만큼 상당한 몰입감을 보여주기도 했다.

 여기에 2막 이후 등장하는 엄청난 반전과 그림과 회화라는 키워드 속에 구현된 퍼즐, 어느 곳 하나 허투루 제작되지 않은 맵과 곳곳에 숨겨진 다양한 미니 게임, 특별 퀘스트 그리고 숨겨진 보스전까지. 
 ‘33 원정대’는 게임의 완성도, 풍부한 콘텐츠, 맵 디자인, 몰입감 넘치는 스토리와 캐릭터의 매력 등 어느 것 하나 뒤처지지 않은 명작이라는 평가를 받기에 합당한 작품이었다.

 물론, 실시간 맵 지도가 제공되지 않고, 패링과 회피가 매우 중요하여 자칫하면 게임 오버가 되는 불편함도 존재하지만, RPG를 선호하는 이들에게 ‘33 원정대’는 꼭 한번 플레이해 볼 만한 작품인 것은 확실해 보였다.
