 항상 '생존'을 외치는 넵튠 자회사 님블뉴런의 '이터널 리턴'이 올해도 살아남는 데 성공했다. 기나긴 얼리 액세스 기간을 넘어 이제는 어엿한 정식 출시 3주년 게임으로 거듭났다.
 3주년은 게임에게 나름 특별한 기념일이다. 다들 농담처럼 "이 게임은 정식 출시를 했는데 왜 시즌 9, 10 사관 후보생 스킨이 있나요?"라고 이야기했지만, 어느새 시즌 11까지 도달했다. 이제 앞으로는 더 이상 '존재하지 않는 기억'도 없다.
 님블뉴런은 특별한 시기를 기념하기 위해 '이터널 리턴 3주년 페스티벌'을 대전에서 개최했다. 이제 대전은 이터널 리턴의 고향이라 불러도 어색하지 않을 정도로 밀접한 관계가 형성됐다. 지난해 2주년 페스티벌은 인천에서 열렸지만, 올해는 다시 대전으로 돌아왔다.
 3주년 행사는 11일부터 12일까지 양일간 오전 10시부터 오후 6시까지 운영된다. 사전 예매 후 야외 티켓 부스에서 입장 팔찌를 수령한 뒤 전시장으로 입장하는 방식이다.

 현장에서는 다양한 체험 프로그램과 함께 이터널 리턴 마스터즈 시즌11 파이널을 직관할 수 있었다. 이번 3주년 행사의 메인 프로그램인 만큼 많은 관람객이 경기장을 찾았고, e스포츠 특유의 현장 열기를 직접 느낄 수 있었다.
 티켓 구매자에게 제공되는 웰컴 키트를 비롯해 체험 프로그램만 참여해도 받을 수 있는 3주년 리오&amp;하트 포토카드, 3주년 하나 스티커, 운석 캔뱃지 등 무료 굿즈도 풍성하게 준비됐다.
 굿즈를 구매하려는 유저들의 표정에서도 만족감이 느껴졌다. 공식 굿즈샵은 물론, 2차 창작 굿즈를 판매하는 '루미아 야시장'까지 다양한 상품이 준비돼 있었다. 마음에 드는 물품을 하나둘 담다 보면 어느새 지갑이 가벼워질 정도다.
 행사장 외부에는 마이크로닉스, 꾸브라꼬 숯불치킨, 길티기어 스트라이브 체험존 등 이터널 리턴과 협업했던 업체들의 부스도 마련됐다. 3주년이라는 의미 있는 행사에서 협업 파트너들까지 함께한 점은 보기 좋았다.
 칭찬할 요소만 있었다면 더없이 좋았겠지만, 아쉬운 점도 분명 존재했다. 가장 큰 문제는 행사 운영이었다. 이날 대전의 기온은 34도를 넘겼다. 내부 온도도 그만큼 높아졌다. 에어컨이 가동되고 있었지만 몰린 인파를 감당하기에는 역부족이었다.

 대기열 관리 역시 아쉬움이 남았다. 1층과 2층 모두 대기의 연속이었다. 특히 입장 직후 가장 먼저 보이는 긴 대기열이 공식 굿즈 구매 대기열이었는데, 이를 행사장 입장 줄로 착각해 시간을 허비한 관람객들도 적지 않았다.
 내부 동선도 개선이 필요했다. 체험 프로그램 부스로 이동하려면 사실상 굿즈 구매 대기줄을 가로질러 지나가야 한다. 인파에 비해 현장 안내원 수가 부족해서 동선 관리에도 어려움이 발생했다.
 기자는 공식 굿즈를 촬영하기 위해 내부로 들어갔다. 이마저도 동선에 혼동을 주지 않기 위해 한적한 타이밍을 찾았다. 이때 취재원의 대응 방법이 공유되지 않았는지 다짜고짜 나가라고만 하는 안내원 때문에 난처한 상황도 발생했다.

 2층 역시 비슷했다. 루미아 야시장 대기열은 좌우로 길게 나뉘어 있었지만, 안내원들은 입장 지점 위주로만 배치된 탓에 후방 대기열이 제대로 관리되지 않았다. 행사 자체는 즐거웠지만, 불필요한 대기 시간으로 아쉬움을 느낀 관람객도 적지 않아 보였다.
 다시 확인해보니 현장 안내원 수는 몰린 인파에 비해 부족했다. 하지만 엄연히 티켓을 구매하고 입장한 관람객 입장에서는 납득하기 어려운 부분이다. 다행히 오후 시간대부터는 이러한 피드백이 반영됐는지, 인력이 추가되고 적극적으로 안내한 덕분에 혼선이 많이 개선됐다.
 2층에서 휴식하고 있던 한 관람객은 "2층 루미아 야시장에 입장하려고 줄을 서 있었는데 알고보니 다른 줄이었다, 지금은 힘들어서 쉬고 있는 중이다"라며 아쉬움을 토로했다. 이어 "시간을 허비했어도 여전히 이터널 리턴은 최애 게임이다, 현장 방문을 후회하지는 않는다"며 응원의 메세지를 전했다.
 굿즈를 가득 구매한 관람객은 "항상 오프라인 행사에 수상할 정도로 사람이 많다, 운영에 아쉬움은 있지만 전체적으로 만족한다"고 전했다. 이어 "2주년 페스티벌에도 참가했는데, 그 때와 비교해 규모는 커졌어도 오히려 즐길 거리는 부족한 것 같다"며 피드백을 남겼다.
 그럼에도 이터널 리턴 3주년 페스티벌은 여름 무더위조차 잊게 만들 만큼 유저들의 열정으로 가득했던 행사였다. 현장의 분위기를 사진으로 함께 담아봤다.
