 중국의 대표 게임쇼 '2026 차이나조이'가 지난 2일 막을 내렸다. 이번 차이나조이는 중국을 비롯한 전 세계 900여 기업이 참여하여 행사장을 가득 채웠으며, 4일간 43만 9천 명에 이르는 관람객이 찾아 명실공히 아시아 최대 규모의 게임 행사임을 다시 한번 입증하기도 했다.
 이렇게 커진 외형과 달리 실제로 3일간 기자의 눈으로 확인한 차이나조이는 신작 공개로 뜨거운 열기로 휩싸인 게임쇼가 아닌 현장 이벤트와 굿즈로 가득한 하나의 거대한 팬 페스티벌의 장이 펼쳐진 듯한 느낌이었다.

 이번 차이나조이는 입장조차 쉽지 않았다. 여권과 얼굴 인식으로 입장을 할 수 있는 것도 신기했지만, 해외에서 찾아온 미디어와 관계자들의 얼굴을 인식하지 못해 입장이 되지 않아 발을 동동 구르는 광경을 행사 기간 내내 볼 수 있을 정도였다. 
 중국 정부의 정책으로 모든 신원인증 시스템에서 얼굴 정보를 수집한다는 것은 알고 있었지만, 중국 밖에서 찾아온 미디어와 참가사들의 얼굴 데이터를 수집하고, 이를 입장 게이트에 적용시키는 것은 중국에서만 볼 수 있는 참으로 기묘한 광경이었다.
 현장의 분위기도 게임스컴, 도쿄게임쇼(TGS)와 같은 글로벌 게임쇼와 크게 달랐다. 게임쇼라고 하면 일반적으로 아직 출시되지 않은 신작을 가장 먼저 체험하고, 대형 게임사의 깜짝 발표를 기다리는 행사를 떠올리기 마련이다.

 하지만 차이나조이의 풍경은 이와 달랐다. 넷이즈게임즈와 블리자드게임즈를 비롯한 대형 부스의 중심에는 이미 중국에서 오랜 기간 서비스된 게임들이 자리했다. ‘WOW’, ‘오버워치’, ‘하스스톤’, ‘제5인격’ 등 이름만 들어도 알 만한 기존 작품들이 즐비했고, 중국 현지에서 서비스되어 낯선 이름을 가진 게임들 역시 대부분 서비스 1~2년이 훌쩍 지난 게임들이었다.

 아이러니하게도 신작이 가장 많았던 부스는 일본의 게임사 소니였다. 소니의 중국 개발사의 콘솔 게임 개발을 지원하는 ‘차이나 히어로 프로젝트’에 포함된 신작들이 등장하여 현장에서 가장 인기 있는 부스로 떠오르기도 했다. 물론, 이마저도 작년과 비교해 규모가 줄어들어 ‘그란투리스모’ 등의 게임이 자리를 크게 차지하기도 했지만 말이다.
 신작 게임을 취재하기 위해 게임쇼를 찾은 입장에서 이미 출시된 게임이 다시 전시관 대부분을 차지하는 모습은 매우 낯선 광경이었다. 게임이 메인이 아닌 코스어와 사진을 찍고, 무대에서 진행되는 퀴즈와 대전에 참여하는 팬 행사가 메인이 되는 모습이었다.

 서브컬처 게임들을 거의 찾아볼 수 없던 것도 이색적인 광경이었다. 몇몇 중국 유명 서브컬처 게임사들이 참가하기도 했으나, 차이나조이 행사 2주 전에 진행된 ‘빌리빌리 월드’와 비교할 수 없을 정도로 서브컬처 게임들의 참여가 저조했다.
 특히, E관에 마련된 서브컬처 관의 크기가 크게 줄어들어 프라모델, 피규어 등의 제품 역시 작년만 못한 모습이었다.

 중국 게임시장의 새로운 블루칩으로 떠오른 서브컬처 장르인 만큼 글로벌로 출시되지 않은 중국의 서브컬처 게임을 볼 수 있다는 기대를 품기도 했으나, 이미 ‘빌리빌리 월드’에서 많은 정보를 공개한 만큼 차이나조이는 이들 게임사의 관심사에서 벗어난 행사인 것으로 보였다.
 이렇듯 신작의 부재는 아쉬웠으나 부스의 규모와 이벤트만큼은 ‘대륙의 기상’이 느껴질 정도로 눈이 휘둥그레졌다.

 가장 많은 관람객이 몰렸던 넷이즈게임즈와 블리자드게임즈 부스에서는 ‘WOW’, ‘하스스톤’, ‘오버워치’, ‘디아블로’, ‘스타크래프트 2’ 등의 게임이 참가했고, 대형 나서스 조형물과 디바 레고 조형물이 설치됐다. 여기에 중국 현지에서만 구할 수 있는 블리자드 굿즈도 다수 등장했고, 실제 크기 무기를 들고 사진을 찍는 공간이 마련되어 팬이라면 눈이 절로 갈 지경이었다.

 또한, 게임사마다 부스 높이를 채울 정도의 조형물을 앞다투어 설치했고, 판타지, 무협, 현대 등 시대와 공간을 가리지 않고, 게임 컨셉에 충실한 형태로 부스가 꾸며져 “저건 또 뭐야?”라는 궁금증이 절도 일어날 정도였다.

 특히, 중국 퀄컴은 벡스코의 크기와 맞먹는 N5관 전체를 ‘스냅드래곤 테마관’으로 꾸며, 비보, 아이쿠, 샤오미, REDMI 등의 기업과 콜라보 전시를 진행했다. 해당 관에서는 스마트폰, 태블릿, PC, 휴대용 게임기, XR 글라스, 웨어러블 기기 등 300종 이상의 기기가 전시됐고, 200개 이상의 기술 시연이 진행되어 중국 하드웨어 시장의 규모를 간접적으로 체험할 수 있었다.
 기업 간의 비즈니스가 진행되는 BTB 관은 중국 게임의 해외 진출을 지원하는 기업들이 주를 이뤘다. 현장에서는 글로벌 결제와 정산을 담당하는 PayPal과 여러 결제 사업자, 동남아시아 마케팅과 이용자 확보를 지원하는 광고 플랫폼, 현지 언어 번역과 고객 지원을 제공하는 업체들이 곳곳에 자리했다.

 실제로 PayPal 중국 법인은 중국 게임사의 해외 성장을 지원한다는 목적으로 W4관에 참가했고, 동남아시아 제휴 마케팅 기업 인볼브 아시아 역시 중국 기업과 해외 시장을 연결하는 서비스를 전면에 내세우기도 했다.
 이처럼 3일간 체험한 차이나조이는 대형 신작을 처음 공개하는 무대보다 이미 확보한 이용자를 결집하는 팬 행사에 힘을 싣는 분위기였다. 발 디딜 틈 없이 관람객은 가득했고, 이들을 즐겁게 해줄 즐길 거리도 현장을 채웠으나, 정작 신작은 없는 게임쇼보다 하나의 거대한 팬 페스티벌을 보는 느낌이 더 정확한 표현이었다.
